Beautiful Village of Besfina, The
Taken from the book "Macedonian Immigrants in Canada and their Background"

The village of Besfina is situated about 35 kilometres southwest of the city of Florina (Lerin) and about 29 kilometres northwest of the city of Kostur. The village is approximately 1500 metres above sea level, and is located in the foothills of the well-known legendary mountain, Varba, and in the small narrow valley of Kresta. Besfina, in 1912, had a total of 70 houses with a population of 450 inhabitants. Besfina is a beautiful village of exceptional charm and natural beauty.

The village is surrounded by a chain of dense mountains with towering green trees such as oak, beech, elm, zlatun and wild maple (yavor). The hills of the mountain, Dvavara, are well known for the aromatic mountain tea, herbs and bitter balsam which are boiled and used for medicinal purposes - for colds and fever.

Besfina had a legendary history in the past on account of its location near the mountains which gave a place of sanctuary for brigands, cerdars, haiduti and kummiti. They were really not outlawed brigands but true Macedonians.
